Jane Thompson They sat in front of a hospital while we watched from behind the rubble pile. I was certain that this was the group that killed Harvey Jr's dad. The bear being the big tip of. my gut also told me Mercury Steele was around. I could feel him.
We were less than 50 meters away, this was as good as it was going to get. Dahvin and I took aim and hit the girl with the bear, but we didn't kill her. In front of us everyone scattered and we had to take out another running at us. Everyone else had either gotten away, or made it back inside the hospital. Damnit!
We hid behind the pile discussing our new plan of attack. That's when I noticed the boy. he had been riding his bike in circles and completely was unfazed by the shoot out that occurred. Dahvin and I argued with Kate and Art about what to do next. I looked up again and the boy was staring at us. His eyes glowed a bright green, and I nudged Dahvin. Robotically, the boy started towards us. Shit.
I had forgotten Diane was with us until she whipped out her gun. Kate screamed that it was just a boy as Art wrestled the gun out of her hands. I didn't know what to do, but I knew it wasn't going to be good. The boy started to climb the pile and despite Kate's protests I grabbed my weapon, but Dahvin beat me to him and slammed the butt of his rifle into the kid's chest. The rifle splintered and the kid stood with no acknowledgement of the event staring right at us. I'll be honest, I was scared. This was clearly no normal kid.
I was about to beat the thing to pieces when someone from inside called to it. The eyes stopped glowing and it turned and skipped off to whoever had called. What the fuck was that thing! Kate was in a fetal position by now, and her obsessive compulsive disorder was really kicking in. She rocked back and forth and I grimaced at her. Mercury Steele was inside and she was having a panic attack.
Art looked stunned, “That’s it, I’m leaving!” he declared and turned toward where we left the horse and cart. I tried to get Kate up on her own, but it was no use and I dragged her behind me by the collar. She tripped and stumbled the whole way. There was really no time to calm her down now, with that... that... robot back there.
Art got onto his bike. “I ain’t fighting no bear, and I sure as hell ain’t fighting no cyborg.” And he pedaled away. This was fantastic. At the time I didn’t think it could get any worse. The idea seemed a lot easier back at the bike shop.
I was pissed though. Not only did we probably not kill any of them, but the cyborg thing was now with them inside. It’s not that I wanted to kill the kid, nobody did, I just wanted to make sure he was out of the way. And if that meant a bump on head for the poor thing so be it. In retrospect we still would’ve found out he wasn’t human. Personally, I thought the glowing eyes was a tip off. My rage was festering quickly, and I felt as if I had stepped out of my body. I began acting rashly.
I considered a new plan of attack, and that was when Kate came out of her dazed trance and went into hysteria mode. She was screaming questions and spitting out words faster than she could think of them creating a jumbled mess of noise. Twice I tried to calm her down with no luck. Her hysteria wasn’t unreasonable, but there wasn't time, “Kate!” I yelled and slapped her across the face.
Stunned for a moment to recollected herself, “Okay.” She took a deep breath, “Okay what the fuck was that thing?”
Dahvin spoke up, “It was definitely a cyborg of some sort, but I’m not sure how dangerous it could be. I know back in the MPD we had mechs, but this seems a little more advanced.”
“We have to figure out how to get into the building,” I said looking around.
Kate stood up, “I can do this. I can sneak around through the garage. At least find out their set up inside.” We argued about her not going alone, and she and I made our way around the obstacles to the garage. Dahvin and the ninja, Diane, stayed and watched from our original rubble pile.
There was a hole in the garage wall near one of the front windows. The windows were boarded up, but there was space between the slats, and Kate snuck up to one to peer through. She could hear them talking, and when she came back we signaled Dahvin and Diane over to us. Inside the targets were setting a trap.
That’s when I had an idea. “We don’t need to get in, we just need them to get out! We can smoke them out!” Kate’s hysteria had rubbed off on me. I was angry at everything, and I was sick of these life and death situations. I dug through my pack pulling out a bunch of paper. Using some other supplies and some of the rubbing alcohol from the first aid kit, I quickly created a small Molotov. “We can throw it at the windows.”
Before anyone could approve, I used my Zippo to start the paper and threw it across the way toward the window. The contraption actually worked and the boards sprouted flames. Something snapped in me, and I ran in front of the building carelessly with another ball of fire and lit another window before darting back to where everyone stood.
I stared into the flames as we waited. I remembered watching the village burn so many times, before finally having to leave. How because of events like this I had to leave the only home I will probably ever know. I remembered the stuff Kate told me after she escaped the Raiders. I was sick of this world where people killed for sport. And if killing these people -people who fed others to bears- was all I got out of today then so be it. I remembered all the pain that started this journey Kate and I were on, and I just wanted it to end in my favor for once.
